CMMS stands for computerised maintenance management system. In practice it is one place that holds what your plant currently keeps in binders, spreadsheets and people's heads: what equipment you own, what broke and when, what was done about it, which spare parts went in, and what is due next.

Reactive maintenance means you repair a machine once it stops. Preventive maintenance means you service it on a schedule so it stops less often. Most plants know they should shift towards preventive work and cannot, because nobody has a reliable record of what was serviced when. That record is what a CMMS gives you.

Availability — the share of planned production time a machine was actually able to run. MTTR, the mean time to repair. MTBF, the mean time between failures. And the one that ends arguments in a management meeting: what the downtime cost. Without a system these are estimates; with one they are measurements.

Roughly from the point where one person can no longer hold the plant in their head — commonly around twenty machines, sooner if equipment is regulated or downtime is expensive. The honest test is simple: if you cannot say how many hours your machines stood still last month, you are already paying for the missing system, just not on an invoice.

Not for lack of features. They stall because reporting a fault takes longer than shouting down the hall, so nobody reports anything and the data goes stale within a month. That is why reporting here is a QR scan with no login — the shop floor has to find it easier than the old way, or none of the rest happens.
